The Mindful Communication workshop was an extremely successful part of our Diversity Day 2011 at Sojourner Truth Academy. At first the message was difficult for the students to hear, but as soon as the students started applying it to real life problems they started getting more excited about it. There were a few student leaders who started using the Mindful Communication language, which made the others fall into line.

You know it is a successful workshop when you have students walking around saying…” When you say ______ it makes me feel _______. Could you please_____?” the next day. It is especially useful for adolescents interacting with adults. When they start using this respectful language, it makes teachers much more willing to engage in a meaningful dialogue if conflicts arise.

I can unswervingly recommend Lou Furman and Turning Point. We utilized Lou’s services as much as possible and received more than we ever dreamed in terms of results. Our leaders were given tools of understanding of the effects of trauma, which was eye opening to all involved. Lou then taught us how to communicate with those who have been traumatized which was applicable with participants, co-workers, leaders, grantors, politicians, or spouses! If possible, we would have engaged Lou in the process before the grant launched, or as early in the training as possible. We also asked Lou to give an executive summary to our Program Managers and Executive Directors, which was very well received. In addition, Lou handled some of our crisis situations. In a short period of time our crew leaders were able to manage their drama on the crew level and were able to bring clarity, trust, healing, and productivity to the participants in a loving manner. In all cases, Lou hit the ball out of the park, making us look like good managers.

Lou Furman conducted a Mindful Communication seminar for our office with great results. Participants not only learned how to better communicate in the office setting but in their own personal lives as well. The seminar gave participants the opportunity to become more aware of their own feelings and how they affect interactions and communications among their peer group. The concepts taught enabled participants to learn to be more precise in their language while maintaining personal integrity. I highly recommend these services for those who desire to truly “seek to understand” and for those who wish “to be understood.” The value of mindful communication cannot be underestimated in the building of relationships in all aspects of life.
